Video Summary
The speaker presented research on how hypertension may be perpetuated by kidney-resident, memory-like CD8 T cells (TRM-like cells). She showed that hypertensive human kidneys and mouse models contain increased CD8 T cells expressing TRM markers such as CD69 and CD103, especially in the kidney interstitium. Her work suggests these cells form without classical antigen exposure and instead are driven by high extracellular ATP and TGF-beta. These TRM-like cells produce interferon-gamma, interact with distal tubule cells, and promote sodium transporter upregulation, increasing sodium retention and blood pressure. In mouse models, blocking TGF-beta signaling prevented TRM-like cell formation and reduced both salt-sensitive hypertension and hypertension recurrence after angiotensin II withdrawal. Overall, the study argues that kidney TRM-like CD8 T cells help “remember” hypertension and may be a therapeutic target.
