Video Summary
Ekaterina Novikova presented a study on T cell responses preceding rejection of genetically modified pig kidneys transplanted into a brain-dead human recipient. Using serial kidney biopsies and blood samples, her team tracked T cell receptor clonotypes over time. They found that human CD3+ T cells infiltrated the xenograft during rejection, but a dominant memory T cell clone expanded first in blood, appeared before clinical rejection, and later matched a clonotype in the kidney. The findings suggest circulating T cells can foreshadow xenograft rejection and may help identify preexisting xenoreactive memory T cells for future patient risk stratification.
