Video Summary
Grace Kim, an MD-PhD student, discussed how COVID-19 severity and long COVID vary widely and may be influenced by HLA genetics. Using the NIH All of Us dataset and HLA imputation from microarray data in over 113,000 participants, her team compared COVID-negative controls with participants who had COVID pneumonia or long COVID. They identified 14 HLA alleles linked to either protection or risk. Class I alleles were more associated with acute viral control, while some class II alleles appeared tied to long COVID, suggesting autoimmune-like mechanisms. The study also noted sex and ancestry-related differences and plans further multivariate analysis.
