Video Summary
The speaker studied how aging affects the cribriform plate, a key drainage site for cerebrospinal fluid and immune cells. In aged mice, she found thicker extracellular matrix around olfactory nerve bundles, more immune cell accumulation, and increased ICAM-1 expression on the nerve epineurium. Light-sheet imaging suggested multiple ICAM-1–positive cell types. Human cribriform plate samples also showed higher perineural ICAM-1 with age. The data suggest ICAM-1 may anchor myeloid cells, promoting inflammation, nerve damage, and reduced drainage, which could contribute to cognitive decline or loss of smell.
