Video Summary
The talk describes how certain gut microbes can either protect against or worsen intestinal inflammation. In germ-free mice, a healthy human microbiome increased IL-22-producing ILC3s and protected against lethal DSS-induced colitis. But in IL-10 knockout mice, the same microbiome also triggered inflammatory T cell responses. After antibiotic narrowing of the community, the protective effect remained while pathogenic T cell induction disappeared. Screening isolated strains identified <strong>Klebsiella oxytoca</strong> as the key bacterium that induces IL-22 from ILC3s through IL-1 receptor 1 and IL-23 receptor signaling, promoting epithelial repair and survival after DSS injury. Because Klebsiella may be a pathobiont, the team is now screening many human commensals to build a safer bacterial consortium that can stimulate the same wound-healing cytokine program.
