Video Summary
Dr. Tyler Jenkins described AKS107, an insulin-specific immunotherapy designed to selectively deplete anti-insulin B cells in type 1 diabetes while sparing other B cells. In NOD and VH125 NOD mice, AKS107 significantly reduced anti-insulin B cells in the spleen, pancreatic lymph nodes, and pancreas, with stronger effects after longer, chronic dosing. It also lowered insulitis, or immune-cell infiltration of pancreatic islets. However, a control antigen showed some similar effects on insulitis, suggesting more study is needed. Overall, the work supports antigen-specific immunotherapy as a more targeted potential treatment for type 1 diabetes.
