Video Summary
Dr. Hemanti Tanwar discussed how periodontitis may contribute to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) through oral bacteria translocating to a disrupted gut. Using IRF8 knockout mice, her team showed periodontal bone loss, oral pathogens reaching the intestine, and resulting colitis-like inflammation driven by B cells, IgG, and TH17 responses. Treating periodontitis reduced gut inflammation. Human studies also linked IBD with higher periodontitis and oral pathogen burden, suggesting that improving dental health may lower IBD risk by limiting colitogenic bacteria.
