Dr. Ethan Shavak recounts his path from a Boston upbringing to a long career at the NIH. His father emigrated from Poland and became an educator after earning an early Harvard PhD in psychology; his mother was also from Boston. Shavak attended Boston Latin School, where science offerings were limited until post-Sputnik curriculum changes allowed him to take physics and chemistry. Entering a new six-year combined BA/MD program at Boston University, he graduated medical school at 23 and trained in internal medicine in the Bronx.

Facing the Vietnam-era draft, he pursued research training at NIH as an alternative to deployment. After an unhappy first lab year with poor mentorship, NIAID leader Sheldon Wolfe allowed him to move, leading Shavak to Ira Green’s lab, where rapid productivity restored his confidence. Collaborating with Alan Rosenthal, he helped discover that effective lymphocyte–macrophage collaboration required shared MHC—an early demonstration of “MHC restriction.” He became a tenured investigator in 1973 and remained at NIH for decades.

Shavak describes NIH in 1969 as intensely competitive and scientifically rich, but notes later declines in MD participation in basic research due to debt, grant pressures, and geographic “stickiness.” He also critiques post-2005 restrictions on NIH consulting.

Scientifically, he highlights a second major contribution: advancing regulatory T-cell biology after revisiting Shimon Sakaguchi’s overlooked work, developing influential in vitro suppression assays despite early skepticism. As Editor-in-Chief of <em>The Journal of Immunology</em> (1987–1992), he restructured editorial operations around active scientist-editors, emphasized fairness and conflict-of-interest management, and expressed concern about proliferating low-quality journals in the internet era.
