Avoiding medicine due to childhood hospital experiences, he chose research over an MD.<br /><br />A postdoc at Los Alamos with early flow cytometry access proved pivotal, leading to a decade at Becton Dickinson developing monoclonal antibodies and immune cell markers during the explosive growth of CD antigen definitions and early AIDS-era clinical flow applications. There he helped define NK cells as a distinct CD16+ lymphocyte population. Seeking deeper molecular tools, he moved to DNAX (1990–1999), which he calls the “Bell Labs of immunology,” where major cytokine and T helper discoveries emerged and his group cloned NK receptors.<br /><br />Recruited to UCSF in 1999, Lanier shifted to mouse models to test NK receptor function, focusing on NKG2D stress-ligand biology in cancer, viral infection, and autoimmunity, including tumor immune evasion mechanisms and cytomegalovirus (CMV) immune control. His lab also helped establish NK cell specificity and “memory,” suggesting future NK-targeted vaccines.<br /><br />Lanier highlights AAI’s role in mentoring young scientists, education (notably the advanced course), and advocacy in Washington. He advises trainees to follow passion across academia, industry, and policy, emphasizing perseverance amid scientific failure, and describes sailing on San Francisco Bay as his main pastime.
