Dr. Olivera (Olya) Finn recounts her journey from former Yugoslavia to a career shaping modern tumor immunology. She immigrated to the U.S. at 18 in 1968 after marrying an American student she met on an exchange program. When her husband faced possible Vietnam deployment, he joined the Coast Guard and was stationed in Puerto Rico, where Finn earned a biology degree, learned Spanish, and published her first paper in parasitology as an undergraduate. Returning to Stanford, she pursued graduate studies, drawn to the intersection of cancer and immunology through work with radiologist Henry Kaplan and exposure to leading immunologists such as Weissman, Herzenberg, and McDevitt, plus collaborators from the Weizmann Institute. A postdoc with Ron Levy deepened her focus on human immunology, especially HLA class II.<br /><br />At Duke, Finn made her landmark discovery of the tumor-associated antigen MUC1. A “eureka” moment came from realizing an antibody target was an enormous mucin-like molecule and that patient-derived T cells could recognize it in an unconventional, partly HLA-unrestricted way via tandem repeats. This work helped establish MUC1 as a major global target for cancer immunotherapy and vaccines.<br /><br />Recruited to the University of Pittsburgh in 1991, she found a collaborative culture that enabled translation to clinical trials, including pioneering prophylactic cancer vaccine strategies in high-risk premalignant settings (e.g., recurrent colon adenomas). Finn also discusses leadership as a “cheerleader” for faculty, severe NIH funding pressures, AAI advocacy, support for international immunology, and advancing women in science. She argues immunology must better define “immune health” and gain a stronger voice in public health policy, especially vaccines.

She was president of The American Association of Immunologists from 2007 to 2008 and served on the AAI Council from 2002 to 2009. Dr. Finn was awarded the AAI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 and elected a Distinguished Fellow of AAI in 2019.
