Dr. Richard A. Goldsby recounts a career shaped by education, mentorship, and timely opportunities. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, he was raised by his mother after his father died of asthma when Goldsby was five. Although he grew up under segregation, he describes an unexpectedly strong public-school education because highly trained Black faculty taught advanced courses. At the University of Kansas, he helped integrate the scholarship halls, finding the environment largely supportive.

Initially drawn to physics, Goldsby fell in love with chemistry—running a basement “lab” as a teenager—and later worked at Monsanto before earning a PhD at UC Berkeley (1959–61) with Nobel laureate Melvin Calvin, whose interdisciplinary style pulled him toward biology. After industry research at DuPont, he moved into academia at Yale, developing techniques for replica plating mammalian cells and studying interferons, then considered more virology than immunology. A sabbatical in Leonard Herzenberg’s lab at Stanford (where flow cytometry was emerging) fully converted him to immunology.

At the University of Maryland he began major work in veterinary immunology, partnering with S. Srikumaran to develop early monoclonal antibodies relevant to cattle. He later joined Amherst College, combining serious research expectations with teaching he loved, and maintained ties with UMass to mentor PhD students.

Goldsby co-founded Hematech with Barbara Osborne, James Robl, and James Barton to clone transgenic cows capable of producing human immunoglobulin, highlighting the gap between proving a technology and delivering a clinical product. He also co-authored <em>Thinking AIDS</em> with Mary Catherine Bateson and began a later book on race. Active in AAI’s Minority Affairs efforts, he emphasizes mentoring and demonstrates minority excellence through scientific lectures. He ends by warning that underfunding threatens U.S. scientific leadership, while affirming he would choose the same life again.

Richard Goldsby is the Thomas B. Walton, Jr. Memorial Professor of Biology Emeritus at Amherst College. Dr. Goldsby delivered the inaugural the AAI Vanguard Lecture in 2003 (known prior to 2015 as the AAI Minority Affairs Committee Guest Lecture) and elected a Distinguished Fellow of AAI in 2021.
